Elizabeth New Jersey is one of the older towns in the state. Originally called Elizabethtown, it was first settled in 1664 by the English, yet became a base for Revolutionary forces against the British.
The town was on the river as most of the early settlements were, so as to take advantage of the waterways to allow trade and commerce. Elizabeth was a large port then and now. It is the fourth largest town in New Jersey and was the initial capital of the state.
A number of major businesses have been based in the town, chief among them Singer Sewing Machines. It was also home to a number of ship building companies as well as one of the early car manufacturers - the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company. The city of Elizabeth is the seat for Union County and covers 5 zip codes - 07201, 07202, 07206,07207, 07208.
Part of the origin of the Garden State, as the area was farm land prior to industrialization, Elizabeth town was the birth place of the central female character in Phillip Roth's American Pastoral.

Elizabeth is also known for its inclusion in the opening scenes of The Sopranos.
