New Rochelle, New York, is a mere 50 miles north of Manhattan, so has the benefits of being part of the greater New York area, but is also far enough away from the crowds to offer a more rural or suburban lifestyle.
The city of New Rochelle has a strong commitment to its parks with two major projects of growth and garden development.
Ward Acres Community Garden is organized and operated by volunteers with the support of the New Rochelle Department of Parks and Recreation. Established in 2009, Ward Acres Community Garden features 88 separate 10'x10' plots. New Rochelle residents can rent plots for a nominal fee per season (approximately May 1 – November 1). The plots use organic planting and cultivating methods to raise vegetables and other plants.
grow! Lincoln Park Community Garden (grow! LPCG), a program of the Lincoln Park Conservancy, is a 10,000 square foot sustainable, organic garden situated on the city-owned campus of Lincoln Park. grow! LPCG was created in 2011, with authorization from the New Rochelle City Council and support from Department of Parks & Recreation, as a lasting commemoration of the 50-year anniversary of the Lincoln Elementary School Desegregation Case of 1961.
The 60-raised bed garden leases plots, at a nominal fee to families, churches, community organizations and businesses. grow! LPCG also has four 50 sq. ft. plots specifically set aside to grow and distribute free crops to the community.
The Westchester county city was settled by Huguenots in 1688 who fled France due to religious persecution: many of whom came from La Rochelle in France, hence the city’s name New Rochelle. Situated on Long Island Sound, the city includes a number of small islands as part of its property. Glen Island among them, home to possibly the first theme park in the United States.
“In 1879 John H. Starin, a former U.S. Congressman and New York transportation king, bought five islands which he named 'Glen Island ' and created perhaps the first theme park open to the public. His 12 steamboats transported millions of New York residents and others to the attractions which included a zoo, a natural history museum, a railway, a German beer garden (around the castle-like structure which still stands today), a bathing beach, and a Chinese pagoda. Today the park is a 105-acre (0.42 km2) island property connected to the mainland by a drawbridge built in the 1920s,” Wikipedia explains.
